I will start with an example:
Don't use fear as example!
If you fear that you will fail an exam, fear is not your problem. Failing the exam is.
Instead of looking for the most dominant emotion that comes up when you think of failing,
work directly on the situation of failing in the future.
So instead of taking as your starting point Fear of failing my exam, start from
Failing my exam.
Why is it better to work like this? Fear is just resistance -- so if you work on fear, you will be working on resistance to the problem, not the problem itself (fear is a part of the problem, sure, but it is also a defense mechanism that prevents us from feeling the problem and therefore resolving it). it is one of the emotions that will come up when you feel the future situation of failing the exam in the future, but it is ONLY ONE emotion.
When you start working, many other emotions will come up.
